After graduating in geography Shirley was employed by the survey section of Hertfordshire County planning department, and by OPCS during the 1981 census. She joined the MRC Environmental Epidemiology Unit in 1982 and has been involved in a very wide range of epidemiological projects since.
Shirley was instrumental, with Professor Barker, in setting up birth cohorts in Hertfordshire, Sheffield and Preston. She retains responsibility for follow-up of the study population in Hertfordshire, is involved in a number of projects there, and represents the study within the CLOSER collaboration. She has linked routinely collected data on hospital admissions and deaths of cohort members with the Hertfordshire Cohort Study database, and has been awarded masters and doctoral degrees for analyses of these routine data, carried out in collaboration with the Centre for Research on Ageing at the University of Southampton (https://www.southampton.ac.uk/ageingcentre/about/index.page).
In addition to her research work, Shirley is also engaged in various aspects of research administration and public engagement.
