As part of the MRC Festival of Medical Research, the MRC Lifecourse Epidemiology Unit held a pub quiz on 22nd June for staff, family and friends at “Rumba” in Southampton. The quiz was opened by our unit director, Professor Cyrus Cooper, and our Associate Professor of Health Psychology, Wendy Lawrence, played quiz mistress.
The quiz consisted of general knowledge questions with a hint of science. Some questions related to the work of the MRC and our own unit. 67 people attended, making up 11 teams, all with their own science related team name. “Don’t Tim Peake at my answers”, “4 Standard Deviations & a worrying outlier” and “E=MRC2” were some of our favourites! Teams were also able to put their artistic skills to the test by creating science related models. See below for some of the entries.
As well as challenging our guests brains, we had a go a testing their brawn. We asked everyone to have their grip strength measured and we plotted their score, according to their age, on our grip strength graph. This allowed everyone to see how strong they were in comparison with other people of the same age. A prize was given for the strongest male and female.
Thanks for everyone who attended and helped make the night such a success. We hope to see you all again next year!
