Versus Arthritis

We are excited to announce that Versus Arthritis was formed in 2018 following the merger of Arthritis Care and Arthritis Research UK.

Versus Arthritis is currently deciding how to rebrand all of it’s Centres of Excellence, but in the meantime, our Centre name and logo remain the same, and work continues as before.

Well done to Lisa Newington (one of our PhD students) on not only getting her systematic review on “Sickness absence after carpal tunnel release” published in the Scandinavian Journal of Work Environment and Health this month, but with an editorial based on her paper in the same issue.  A great achievement!

Retirement – a false goal?

TEDxNewnham, the first TEDx organised by a Cambridge College, was held in February 2018.

Among the inspiring speakers was Professor Dame Carol Black, who gave a talk entitled “Retirement – a false goal?” – What if working longer is the key to living better?

‘Rest’. ‘Seclusion’. ‘Removal from Action or Danger’: this is what ‘retirement’ means. But in the UK in the twenty-first century we might live for 30 or 40 years beyond retirement. Are we, Professor Dame Carol Black asks, doomed to spend all that time in bed – or could it be the start of a new chapter?

…from our annual scientific meeting in February.  Many thanks to those who presented their work, and to everyone who came and made it such a good day!

Congratulations to Cheryl Jones

Many congratulations to Cheryl Jones (Centre PhD student at the University of Manchester), who passed her PhD viva on Friday 23rd March.  Her thesis explored the economic impact of presenteeism.

Professor Keith Palmer retires…

…after over 22 years working at the MRC Lifecourse Epidemiology Unit.

We marked the occasion with a lovely afternoon tea party for all members of staff, and we were delighted to be joined at the last minute by two research collaborators who flew in specially from Denmark!

We all wish Keith a long and happy retirement – he’ll be much missed in the Centre.
